Jethro's Advice to Moses
"But select capable men from all the people—men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain—and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens."
"Have them serve as judges for the people at all times, but have them bring every difficult case to you; the simple cases they can decide themselves."
Exodus 18:21-22 (NIV)
1. Select Capable Men
Leadership requires competence. Choose people with proven abilities and skills for the task at hand.
2. Fear God
True leadership begins with reverence for God. Spiritual foundation precedes organizational structure.
3. Trustworthy & Honest
Leaders must be people of integrity who can be trusted with responsibility and resources.
The Delegation Principle
Moses was trying to do everything himself, leading to burnout. Jethro advised a tiered leadership structure:
- Leaders over thousands
- Leaders over hundreds
- Leaders over fifties
- Leaders over tens
This created clear accountability and manageable spans of control.
Modern Application
These principles remain relevant for leadership today in:
- Church leadership structures
- Business organizations
- Community leadership
- Family structures
The key is matching responsibility with capability and character.
